Bedroom Update #4

First I want to thank each and every one of you for your kind words yesterday.  The prayers, the hugs and the love were heartfelt and I am thankful for all of your support.  My husband and I read each comment with tears in our eyes and hope in our hearts.  You all are the best group of people I've (n)ever met!

Well, today is Thursday and as we go about our normal routine I need to post to two of my favorite parties....Leigh @ Tales from Bloggerittaville for Thrifty Thursday and Suzanne @ Coloradolady for Vintage Thingies Thursday.  This is one of my favorite blog days to see what thrifty, vintage finds are being found.

I have to admit that my guest room makeover did not get finished before I went back to work on Monday, but it is slowly coming along.  I'm trying to come up with some accessories for the room and I found some vintage plates at various thrift stores that I thought would be a fun addition.  My family and I have moved several times in the past years.  We have lived in Ohio, Wisconsin, Minnesota, California and now Missouri.  Since I wanted this room to have a vintage, travel theme I thought I would add some souvenir State plates that represent each state that we have lived in to an area of the bedroom.

Here's a picture of the area next to the closet where the plates will hang.  I would have tried to hang them before posting but I can't find my Minnesota plate at the moment (a sure sign of having too much stuff!).

Here are a few pictures of the plates:

These are kind of kitschy but I think it's a fun way to remember all of the wonderful areas we have lived.  As soon as I find my Minnesota plate I will be hanging these in the room.

Hop on over the Leigh and Suzanne's blogs to check out other thrifty and/or vintage finds.

Jane

I have a lot of blue and white transferware but no wall space in my kitchen. Since my master bedroom is blue & white, you have given me an idea! Thanks, Jane!

  14. I love to hang plates for decoration. I think it started when my mother in love (china painter) started giving us hand painted plates. But I do love other decorated plates as well. They are a fun and inexpensive way to add charm to a room. Thanks for sharing yours.

  17. Love the plates from all the different states you lived in. Great idea. We moved quite a bit ourselves but have finally settled here. I have X-mas ornaments to remind us of each state we lived in but nothing that I could display year round. Wish I had me some plates like yours! Great start on your room.

  28. First off, somehow I missed your post yesterday. I am so sorry to hear that, I know it seems like such a shock. Prayers for you and your husband during this trying time. I will keep you both in my prayers.

I like the idea of the plates, I just saw a wedding on a blog, and the plates they used were these vintage souvenir plates, it was really a neat look. I think this is a perfect addition to your room. The wall color is wonderful by the way!

    Have a great VTT!

  29. What a wonderful reminder of past homes and friends. I inherited my mother's spoon collection so now I add to it when we visit or move to a new area. My house is small so the spoons fit. lol. I do love how the plates look, wish I had room. :-) Thanks for dropping in at junkblossoms, come back soon!

  32. Hi Jane -
I love the plates and think they are perfect for your vintage travel room. I just read your last post and want you to know that you and your family are in my prayers.

Thanks for coming by and helping me with my hutch decor dilema:) I agree with you and think it needs a little greenery and I'm thinking of removing the letters and maybe adding some cookbooks to the top shelf for some added color.
    Hugs,
    Toni

  33. Jane, I love your state plates. They are perfect for your guest room redo. Gosh, I have lived in so many states, don't know if I'd ever find them all.
I'm so sorry about your husband having ALS. I am out of town this week and having a hard time keeping up with my blog reading. You both will be in my prayers and is there is a specific way I can pray let me know. I have a friend whose 40 yr. old son was just diagnosed with the same. I am just learning about it, so know you two have a hard time ahead. Thanks for being able to share so we can pray for and support you.

  34. Jane, I think that the curtains as a privacy between guest bath and bedroom would be wonderful. I've seen this done before in a way that you can either close it for complete privacy or just as basically decoration and semi-privacy (like the last picture on my blog post shows). I love the way that is tied back and just allows a person to realize there is a slight division. I also love the round curtain finials that I used to hang the curtains. I now have a similar treatment in my dining room. Anyway -- it allows you to bring in another patter or element to your decor -- fabric (which adds further interest). See -- I've been reading my design books (haha). Again I have to tell you that I LOVE your brown and white!!!

  35. I like the plates -- not kitschy at all! And isn't the point of decorating a room to make it about you, and reflect your own personality and interests? I think it is. (By the way, the picture at the top of your blog could be my family! It's pretty eerie.)

Want to make a recommendation for a great book on decorating tips, "At Home with Laurie Ann. She has all kinds of tips, all written in a very down-home style, that shows you how to take flea market finds, plus re-do things you already own, to create a whole new look at give you a wow factor (if that's what you want). It helps you make your house your own and reflect your personality. And the photo gallery is to die for. I just love it.

  36. Hi! I'm catching up a bit late here. I think those plates will look great against the wall color, and be really interesting with the theme of your room. Can't wait to see them up there. That space seems perfect.
