Collection Display Shelf

I found an interesting wood piece at the antique mall last weekend for $4.00 and knew right away that it had to come home with me.  One of the ladies working the checkout said it came from her booth and told me it was a handle from a vintage push lawn mower.  She couldn't imagine what I was going to do with it but I knew exactly how I was going to use it.....as a shelf for one of my crazy collections.....my brass hose nozzle collection.

Yes, I have a collection of brass hose nozzles.  It all started with the little one in the middle.
When I found it at an antique store a couple of years back I bought it "just because".  Something about it caught my eye and at a cost of a couple of bucks it didn't break the bank.  Well after buying that first nozzle I found myself looking for more and before you knew it I had a collection.

What is interesting is that, with the exception of the 1st and 4th nozzles in the picture above, no two nozzles are alike.  It's a fun thing to look for when I'm out antiquing/thrifting and the nozzles can still be found for around $3.00 - $5.00 (or maybe in your own garage).

I love the shapes and patina of all the nozzles and think that they make a wonderful statement on my "new" shelf.

After looking around my house and studio it is clear that I have a lot of collections.  So this week I am planning on posting everyday about one of my many collections and how I have them displayed.  Come back and see what other crazy collections are scattered around my house.

I'm joining Donna @ Funky Junk Interiors for her popular Saturday Nite Special party.  A lot of creative people have linked up with some great projects so be sure and check them out.

I hope you're enjoying your weekend.

  1. Hi Jane! First of all, I like how your mind works with your new "shelf"! If that isn't perfect for old hose nozzles, I don't know what is! :) Love how you have this all placed above a door.

Can't wait to see what other tricks you have up your sleeve with other collections.

Love your new header...which one is you?

  3. Oh...I likey likey! Let me tell you, if I had one of those? I'd use it! The new plastic ones might be fancier, but they DO NOT last! I love this and how well it worked out over your door! Just don't slam that door too hard or CONK! Ha!

  4. Oh my gosh, those nozzles remind me of my grandfather. He had a special nozzle for each use and I was always told not to mess with them.
Yours look great and like they were meant to be with the shelf!

  5. Jane, that handle makes a great little shelf! I love the way your hose nozzle collection looks all lined up like that. This is too funny though, because last fall as we were putting lawn care items away for the winter, I told my husband that he had enough old nozzles and sprinklers to start a collection! :-) I don't know if they are still out in the garage or if he got rid of them.

  9. How unique, Jane! I love that you used it for a shelf and what a great collection! Do we ever really know why we collect certain things? I collect bunnies {more than any other thing} and I had thought of doing a post on them and where I have them. Thought that might work well what with Easter and all. : ) Looking forward to seeing what else you collect!

  19. Well, you certainly have a discerning eye for finding treasures. It's amazing how most people fail to see the art, craftsmanship, and beauty of everyday objects. Obviously, you possess an appreciation that is quite unique and special. Thank you for sharing. I look forward to peeking at your other collections.

  29. I love that you have a brass nozzle collection. They remind me so much of growing up. We always had this kind of nozzle on the hose and of course I always wished we had the more "modern" kind. Great shelf and it's in the perfect spot for your collection.

  30. Jane,
I love the simple, yet unique lines of each nozzle. I would have never thought to collect them, but your collection is really stunning! Love the "shelf" too!

  31. Well Jane your imagination knows no bounds! I could not imagine what you would do with the old lawnmower handle but it made perfect sense when I saw the photo!Maybe it would make a handy "rolling pin" too for rolling out dough!I think my Dad had one of these type lawnmowers too.At least now I will look on my husbands tool box with new eyes and forage through it for future treasures!

  32. I have a small collection of those too, but they're just laying around in the garage, and not displayed so wonderfully like yours are! I love that you know right away what you wanted to do with that mower handle. You've definitely got an eye for that! I can't wait to see your other collections and how you display them!
    Happy Sunday!

  33. well, this is a first for me - I never knew anyone who collected these - the display looks great - and if I ever came over your house, I would have to remember to never slam that door because I would be the ONE who would disrupt your display, get klunked on the head by one of the nozzles, and end up with a concussion - haha. Never got to the Post Office yesterday...but will get there soon!

  34. I love it! Only YOU would collect something so different and make it look like a million dollars!!! And I see you have it over the door in the "new bedroom"???

I just love how you find beauty in the most overlooked things...that's what I love so much about you!!!!!
    ;)

  35. Jane,
That's got to be one of the neatest ideas ever and the best collection of hose nozzles I've ever seen. Well, actually I have never known anyone who collected hose nozzles until you!

Great way of displaying them too.
You win the blogerette award for most unique unsuspecting collection!

  44. What a clever spot and way of displaying your collection. We have a new house and an open floor plan and tend to complain about not having enough wall space. Well, I need to think more like you!

PS-I want you to know I have been thinking of you and your husband, often. Take care.
