I think I'm in a "middle of the week" creative slump.
I haven't been very motivated to work on projects which is not a good thing considering Christmas will be here before you know it.
So my White Wednesday post today is about a simple little item that I spray painted a couple of weeks ago. I forgot to take a "before" picture but we've all seen these at thrift stores....the wood spice rack. I found this one for $1.00.
Typically these little racks are unpainted and have "Spices" written across the top (which for some reason makes me laugh.....like the cook of the house might forget what was in all the little jars).
I gave this spice rack a coat of Heirloom White spray paint and, since I'm not one to spend time in the kitchen, came up with a few different uses for the rack.
1. Organizing and storing small embelllishments.
2. A kitchen display for favorite cookbooks (this would be a purely decorative item in my kitchen).
3. My favorite use.....a display piece for a grouping of like items.
I took some of the things I found in Paris this past summer that didn't have much impact on their own and grouped them together in the rack to create my display.

I included the souvenir Eiffel Tower found on every street corner in Paris.
A vintage French advertising card.
A 1920's Paris guidebook.
A framed photo I took of the Eiffel Tower.
And a vintage Paris postcard book.
I'm keeping this display as a fun reminder of our vacation.
Some other ideas I came up with that I didn't get pictures of:
4. Christmas card holder
5. A display for a grouping of small framed photos
6. A holder for small jars in the bathroom for cotton balls, q-tips etc.
Do you have any other ideas for these old spice racks (and don't tell me spices...I know you want to)?
I'm linking with Kathleen @ Faded Charm for White Wednesday. Hop on over and check out some of the wonderful whites!

loving the group display idea too!
ReplyDeleteYou are always so creative, I guess we all slip into a slump now and then, hope you bounce back.
Maybe it is this silly weather, it can't make up its mind the midwest is way too hot for such xmas like creative state of mind.
Take care
Amy
Great ideas! Love the Paris collection the best! I will be looking at a spice rack in a whole new way now!
ReplyDeleteI love your spice rack redo! Your Parisian display is awesome! What a great reminder of your trip!
ReplyDeleteGreat ideas for that spice rack. I love that "Paris in a Nutshell" book! The graphics are great!
ReplyDeleteKeeeeute! I"m loving it. All your displays work for me! I'm thinking you will come up with something wonderful for Christmas and a white display....can't wait to see what you do!
ReplyDeleteBlessings,

I can definitely relate--it's just a short while before Christmas, and my creative juices have been a little lack-luster. Everything I thought I would do and conquer just didn't quite happen. Oh well, Christmas doesn't have to be a deadline!
ReplyDeleteLove your new use for the spice rack!
I have been on the lookout for one of these spice racks with no luck. I love the idea you have by putting cookbooks upright on the counter, very clever.
ReplyDeleteIt's so cute...love all your ideas...favorite is the Christmas cards:)
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Linda
These are awesome ideas. Who would have "thunk" you could do so much with a spice rack?
ReplyDeleteWell, it's obviously a versatile piece then, Jane! : ) Lovely ideas for it and I love your Paris incarnation. I know what you mean about being unmotivated. I did mention to Marsha {Sassy Marsha} that I think it's because I have a few unfinished projects taking up the room on my craft/creative table. I am determined to clear them up by the end of this coming weekend and hope that gets me motivated again. A nice clear space to create on again!
ReplyDeleteThe Paris collection in the rack is really fabulous!! I like it the best!!
ReplyDeleteXO,
Jane
So cute for books. How about photos?

Great idea with the Paris theme! Hmmm, How about hanging a mini banner from it(while it's hanging) and change out the decor for every season. It would also be cute as a towel holder in a guest bathroom.
ReplyDeleteI'll never look at a spice rack the same again!
Jody
I love your little ode to Paris display!! Great way to display your favorite momentoes!! Smiles, Julie
ReplyDeleteI love it! My mom has one these in her basement (just taking up space) I think it just might be calling my name! :)Great ideas! I love the Paris Display. Thank You for sharing and have a blessed week!
ReplyDeleteI love the Paris display. My mom used to place her perfume bottles in a vintage spice rack in the bathroom. That was way back in the 70's.
ReplyDeleteLove your ideas. What about turning it upside down and hanging some pretty linen towels or fabric from the dowel? then you will have a ledge on top to put other items.
ReplyDeleteYou keep challenging me to look outside the box.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great example. I crown you "Queen of Outside the Box".
Hi Jane, you clever girl you! I love all of your ideas and especially the Paris!!!
ReplyDeleteI always pass these buy at the thrifts, but not anymore. Thanks for the many ways we can use this.
hugs
Sissie
I guess I'm going to keep my eye out for a spice rack or maybe several-could use them all over the house!
ReplyDeleteLots of great uses for such a versatile little rack! I've been collecting shaker jars for my old glitters~ a rack like that would work well for a pretty display! Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteLove it! Now I wish I would have kept my spice rack!!
ReplyDeleteWOW, what a wonderful ideal!!! Love the Paris in a Nutshell, it's gorgeous! Happy White Wednesday... blessings~~~ Daphne
ReplyDeleteadding *spice rack* to my thrifting shopping list - I don't see a slump in your creativity at all! great post.
ReplyDeletePammy
Oh, so nifty!! I love your repurposing :)
ReplyDeleteBlessings!

Jane I am in love with that Paris guidebook!! I love how you gather things together and make the sweetest vignettes!! Happy WW!
ReplyDeleteThat is so clever. I think I like the Parisian themed one the best. Maybe if you write Paris on it you won't forget what is in it.
ReplyDeleteI love your Paris grouping the best! Hmmm...the only other thing I can think of is grouping up some children's books. Or what about some vintage tins? I have some tobacco ones that would fit quite nicely in there!
ReplyDeleteJeanine
Love what you have done...I 've seen them used as a towel rack...with soaps and cotton balls, etc on the shelf and pretty linens hanging over the rod
ReplyDeleteWhatta cute idea. I use mine to store my nail polishes. They make them look like a nail shop. So pretty. So many colors : )
ReplyDeleteI love the Paris vignette. That "Paris in a Nutshell" book is a find!
ReplyDeleteI think I have one of these old racks hanging up in my garage. I'm going to go look for it tomorrow.
Love your little spice shelf makeover and all the different ways you can use it for displays. I am really getting into using common items in different ways. You are the queen of makeovers!
ReplyDeleteHi dear, oh it looks great, Jane- and so full of possibilities, what a scoop ,for no money--
ReplyDeleteAll the Paris reminders, looks wonderfull sitting there, untill you find new things to be shown .
Hugs and happy week-end dear Jane,
