Repurposed Vintage Mortise Lock

I have an obsession with old alarm clocks.

What started as a small collection has grown to over 40.
I have the clocks scattered around my house and I'm always looking for new ways to display them.

Today I found two vintage mortise locks at an antique store that I immediately saw as small shelves for two of my vintage clocks.
I know it's hard to tell from my picture but both of these locks required skeleton keys to open them, so they have to be pretty old.
I took a lock and, with the face plate pressed against the wall, screwed the lock into the wall using the holes that were already in the face plate.
That's all there is to it!  For a total cost of $3.00 I now have two small shelves, the perfect size to display a couple of my vintage clocks.
I hung these two "shelves" in my guest bathroom with some vintage mirrors I already had hanging.  I really need to get some fresh paint on the walls in this room.  It's the only room in the house with the original builder's paint.

I'm now going to be on the lookout for more of these old mortise locks.  I think several of these "shelves", each displaying one of the vintage clocks, would make a great wall display.
I'm joining a few parties tonight:

Wow Us Wednesday with Kim @ Savvy Southern Style
and
White Wednesday (I might be pushing it a little here but a couple of my old clocks are white) with Kathleen @ Faded Charm.

Happy Wednesday!

Jane

I just passed on a whole box full :(
not that they would have been cheap to ship but...
anyway, your collection is amazing and love how you have thought of displaying them.

  6. That is a great and creative idea for them, Jane! These mortise locks are really the perfect display shelf for your clocks. I could see you doing several of these on a wall. You've got such a great collection. I love clocks, too, although I don't have quite as many as you. : ) I do think I have one in every room in my house and yet I still look at them when I'm out at stores.

  20. I too love old clocks...your collection is amazing! I love the black and white ones, but the pink one made me smile. I have several of those old mortise locks because when we built our home, I salvaged all old doors for interior doors and they have mortise locks in them...I now have a weekend project...did you have to hit a stud to hold them...Tiff the3steers@charter.net

  23. Jane I know I say this everytime I come hear and you might be tired of saying the same thing over and over, but I want your brain!!!!!! You just blow me away with how you can look at anything (and I mean anything) and repupose it into something totally amazing.

Would you mind if I used this idea in my studio? It will be in an upcoming issue of Where Women Create, and I have a tiny little space that needs 'something'. This would be perfect to display a couple of my creations on.

  29. I used a door knob with the mortise piece screwed into the wall for a hook in my sewing room. You can hang quite a few hangers from the door knob. Kudos to you for being brave to put these in your wall. I'm always intimidated to do this kind of thing because most of the time that I have, I didn't anchor them good enough.
:( I just love all of your clocks!! Especially the art deco ones! Or maybe especially the white ones!

  30. Very creative idea. I know that should I ever find one I will think about you.
For some reason vintage hardware is not easily found in my area. I am forever looking for knobs and keys and hinges, and rarely do I find anything. Someone must have a barn full!
