Quilt Piece Pincushions

I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend.
I went shopping at some great vintage markets, spent some time outdoors, watched some basketball and worked on some fun projects.

Today I decided to dust off my old sewing machine and work on a sewing project.

I've had these cutter quilt pieces for a few months now.
I love the random selection of fabrics and the hand-pieced work that someone put into these quilts years ago.

There is quite a bit of wear on these pieces so I decided to use some of the better sections of the quilt and make some pincushions.
These are very simple to make and go together quickly.
No pattern needed for these.  I used a bowl to trace two circles, a sewing machine to machine stitch the two pieces together, some fiberfill to stuff each pincushion, some embroidery thread to define the wedge shapes and a button for the middle.
I made several to display in a bowl (I'll use them for pincushions later).
I love the bright colors.....they just say spring to me.
You can see some of the wear of the fabrics in these little pincushions but I think that just adds to their charm.
Here are some of the fun parties I'm linking to:

Metamorphosis Monday with Susan @ Between Naps on the Porch
Masterpiece Monday with Mary @ Boogieboard Cottage
Amaze Me Monday with Carrie @ Dittle Dattle
Motivate Me Monday with Kaysi @ Keeping It Simple

Have a great week.

  4. These are so pretty! Glad that this quilt had not seen the end of it's useful and beautiful life, even after it was too tattered to be a blanket anymore.

  6. Hi Jane,
They look like pretty little flowers! They are darling! I should add that to my "do" list. Maybe I could use vintage fabric as I don't have any cutter quilt pieces. First I must dig out the sewing machine! LOL!
    How's your hubby??!
    Warmly,

  7. Ohhh, these pincushions are wonderful! I love anything made from old quilts, and these are really adorable!

I have those same bowls from Ikea! I had four, but broke one, so the set is ruined. I will have to keep one out to use as a tracing item, and the other two can be used for cat food and water bowls!

    Best,

  9. Your pin cushions are just so cheerful and vintage. They almost make me feel as if I could be sitting by my grandmother as she sewed at her old treadle sewing machine. Isn't it odd that sometimes a visual image can give you a "flashback".....but the memory was beautiful. Thanks for sharing how to make these. I have an old cutter quilt and now I know how to use part of it.

  18. Jane, these are great! I love old quilts and these pincushions are so sweet. They look fun stacked together in a bowl. I have a box of heart shaped quilt pincushions that I've collected through the years. It would be fun to mix in some of these. Clever idea to make the wedge shapes with the twine. You are full of wonderful ideas! ~ Sarah

It's funny the old rusty things that make it into our homes for us to love! I bought a bunch a year or so ago to alter but I just love seeing them perched on the shelf as is. Happy Monday! xoxo
