Oak File Cabinet - Part II

In yesterday's post I showed you the bottom part of an old oak file cabinet that I found at the thrift store.
I pictured it with some vintage suitcases on top for a nightstand for my guest bedroom.
When I originally purchased the cabinet I was not intending on using it for a nightstand.
At that time I was most interested in the drawer.
Looking at how the cabinet drawer was made I thought it would make a cool shelf.
The face of the cabinet drawer is now the bottom of the shelf.
Lots of room for display.
And the wood slider piece in the drawer that held the files in place......I anchored it with a couple of screws so that it could be used as a mini shelf.
Now I have to decide.  Do I use the drawer as intended in the cabinet for my nightstand?
Or do I keep it hanging on the wall as a shelf?
Well....I love the drawer as a shelf so it's going to stay on the wall for awhile.  It can easily go back into the cabinet if I tire of it hanging on the wall.

OK, now I have a big opening to fill in the cabinet.
I guess there will be a post called "Oak File Cabinet - Part III.

I'm linking this with Debra @ Common Grounds for Vintage Inspiration Friday.

Have a great weekend.

Jane

  17. I love it as a shelf, and the best part is that you can easily change your mind and use it for a nightstand! Maybe a little train case in the opening? I'm sure you'll think of something!

  19. The shelf is great but I like being able to see the front face of the drawer, so I am going to vote nightstand.

  20. The shelf is fabulous ~ it gets my vote!
I think you could still use the base under your suitcase...and I like Prior's idea of putting a small suitcase inside!
    Have a great weekend!

  33. I have come up with some unique ideas for shelves myself, but I have to admit that a file cabinet drawer would not have been one of them! Much more interesting than the nightstand, but maybe you could find an old basket to put in there instead.

  34. I love both of your ideas, Jane! The drawer makes a great shelf. You could still use the cabinet frame to hold you suitcases and close the hole with a picture or shutter or something else.
    Have a great weekend!

  35. The shelf is very very cool! I like the drawer as a nightstand with the suitcases on top, but you can always use the frame and just attach an interesting piece of wood (or something even more creative that your awesome brain cells will surely think up!) to it to keep the nightstand idea. Looking forward to see what you come up with!

    Best,

  40. This is SO cool, Jane. You really have a way of thinking "out of the box" or cabinet in this case. When I saw it as a nightstand I was like "Oh yea!", but then as a shelf it's really a one-of-a-kind piece.
I'm so glad you're husband is doing so well with his new "vehicle". You guys make an awesome couple!
    xoxo Debra

  42. I think a piece of burlap fabric would look nice strung across the opening of the cabinet, with a rod pocket sewn in so it can slide open and closed... the drawer looks too nice on the wall to take it down now! :)

  43. oooo...that is a tough decision but I agree it looks great on the wall, besides now you have another "decorating challenge" to solve...which we know is so much fun :) Can't wait to see what you come up with! Laurel
