Almost two years ago, shortly after my husband Bruce was diagnosed with ALS, he was the honoree at a local ALS golf tournament. Prior to the tournament, the ALS association asked us to write up a little bio about Bruce that could be displayed at the tournament.
Bruce and I sat down and wrote the bio and when we finished, he read it, and then commented that it sounded like he led a pretty ordinary life.
I couldn't disagree with him more.
Bruce led a life that was anything but ordinary and the true character of this man and just how extraordinary he was really shone after he was diagnosed with ALS.
From the day he was told he had a terminal disease Bruce faced the reality of his fate with courage, optimism and a will to fight. He never asked "Why me" and he put his energy into volunteering for clinical trials and raising money for ALS research. For two years running he was the top fundraiser for the local "Walk to Defeat ALS" fundraiser, raising over $60,000 for the cause. In late December he collaborated with the local ALS chapter to set up a Promise Fund Campaign so that the work to raise funds for ALS research could continue in his name. He was comforted knowing he could continue the fight to find a cure for this horrible disease after he was gone. He made a difference and that made his life anything but ordinary.
Bruce lost his battle with ALS today.
He died peacefully with his family by his side.
He lived for 54 years but will leave a legacy that will last forever.
I want to thank all of you for your support and prayers over the past few months.
I know they were heard.

Jane,my deepest sympathy to you and your family.
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry for your loss. May you find peace in the memories you have of such a wonderful man.
ReplyDeleteOh Jane, I was just thinking about you and Bruce yesterday and wondering how you were doing. I'm writing with tears in my eyes, I'm sure this was the post you didn't want to ever write. How humble a man to think he was ordinary, the ordinary person, when faced with a terminal illness, worries about themselves, they don't raise money for people they don't know that will in the future face this horrible disease. I feel so bad for your son, he is way to young to lose his dad at such a fragile time in his life, but he is so lucky to have such a strong Mom, a lady that God hand picked because he knew she could handle this. I'm hoping you find peace with the realization that Bruce could not keep on, keeping on, and that you were appreciated for the care and comfort you gave Bruce in this battle. We are all here for you Jane, 24/7 No need for a brave face, we'll listen if you want us to listen, laugh if you want to laugh, and cry if you want to cry! May God hold you and your son in the palm of his hand
ReplyDeleteCarol
My heart hurts for you. May God be with you and your family today and in the coming months as you try to make sense of this. I am so very sorry.

Oh Jane. My thoughts are with you and your family.

Jane-
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry that Bruce has passed. You've written a lovely tribute to your husband and you said yourself-- he has left a legacy that will continue in his name to help fight this disease. So you see he didn't lose his battle with ALS. Like all of us--he was given his time here to do whatever it was that the LORD had for him to do. This is all part of that. I think Bruce won his battle--especially if he was able to keep up his spirit and his fight.
You have a wonderful reason to call him your hero.
I am praying for you and for your family. You may miss him here; but find peace in knowing that one day you will see him in Eternity.
I pray for comfort and blessings these following days as you celebrate his life!
your friend, Pat

Just wanted to say that your husband was obviously a man struck down with a senseless illness way too early...I too lost my father at 60 and it is just way too young for a once healthy man to be taken away when so much of life was left to live...A courageous story and wonderful to think that he spent so much time when ill fighting it and making it better for others by way of the amazing funds raised for research...I hope your heart rests easy over time and his memory lives on...Suzanne, Australia.

ReplyDeleteMy thoughts and prayers are with you and your family Jane.
ReplyDeleteHugs to you.
That picture of him, that face, tells us he was anything but ordinary. It's the kind of face that draws people in and I'm guessing everyone that met him liked him and became a friend. He has that kind of wonderful face. When I saw the picture in my blog roll, I didn't want to read it just yet. I knew what it was going to tell me but if I didn't read it yet, then maybe it wasn't true and you had more time with him. He was so young. I'm so sorry for you and your children that he was taken so young, but so happy for you all that you had that kind of husband and father. I too lost my father when he was relatively young. It was a life changing event for me but I focused on how fortunate I was to have the father I had and that he got to raise me to adulthood. I, too, just wish it had been for a little bit longer.
ReplyDeleteYour post is beautiful and hopefully raises awareness of ALS just as he would want. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers.
Thoughts and prayers are with you.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry for your loss. Prayers going out to you and your family. Comfort and peace.

ReplyDeleteThough we are strangers in this life, my heart hurts for you. The loss of a loved one--even when you can see it coming--is so hard. And losing a life partner---the one who "gets" you and supports you and shares the reality of daily life--cuts the deepest. Know that strangers are sending thoughts of love and healing for your spirit.

ReplyDeleteHi Jane,so shocked to read this news this evening.I thought it was an update on your husbands fundraising efforts and could not believe the news, too young and so soon.My sympathies to you and your family at this time.
ReplyDeleteHere in southern Ireland we have a very well known sports broadcaster suffering from the same disease, though its called Motor Neurone Disease here,he is in his late 50s I would think, diagnosed last March 2011.He featured on a special programme last week during which he spoke of his life as it is now.He is in a wheelchair at this stage and has had to resign from broadcasting as his speech was becoming slurred. He has been approved to take part in clinical trials of a new drug for MND and is fully participating in anything that might slow this illness or cure it.He is such a popular person here that 600,000 people watched the show that night.A lovely soap opera actress lost her life to it a few years ago here too.It is such a terrible thing to be diagnosed with and seems to be getting more prevalent.
Your husband looked like a lovely gentle man, sympathies again to you.
Families are Forever...may you and your family be encircled with love and comfort from our Heavenly Father, family and friends. So sorry for your loss...it is so hard to lose a best friend.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry for your loss.

What a handsome man and his smile tells it's own story of courage, hope, joy and love. His story, along with your loss today, has put all of my personal problems in prospective...for that I thank you both. Godspeed to Bruce and prayers for your broken heart.

ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry to hear of your loss. I know what you are going through because I just lost my mom a few weeks ago after a short but courageous battle with a brain tumor. ReplyDeleteJane,
ReplyDeleteMy heart is just broken for you and your family. I was touched by this disease over 20 years ago when my dad died with ALS. His doctor made the statement that he was one-in-a-million. I have remembered that all of these years and for probably a totally different reason that what the doctor meant. My dad was one-in-a-million for the way he handled the diagnosis and it certainly sounds like your wonderful husband was one too. You're in my prayers. Your friend in Memphis, Susan

ReplyDeleteJane, I am so sorry for your loss!! It sounds like your husband was a wonderful man and you'll always be very proud of his life and how he handled his illness. It was so good of him also to give so much of his limited time to help others who will follow him with this illness. Take care of yourself!!! My heart goes out to you!

Dear Jane,
ReplyDeleteI started photographing the sky this week and the phrase "blue skies" was coming to me today. Now I come here and read your post. I think about what your husband suffered and I know that now, he only sees blue skies instead of the dark and grey that he faced here on Earth. My prayer for you is that every time you look up and see the blue sky you will know in a very real way the peace that your husband feels now and that you will know the peace that only Christ can give.
In Christ and Mary,
Jill
