Nut Cracker Plate Stand

Happy Father's Day to all the Dad's out there!

I am lucky to live within an hours drive from my Mom and Dad so I get to see them often.  Dad is not in good health and unfortunately has experienced a significant decline over the past couple of weeks.  My sisters decided to drive up from Dallas this weekend to surprise Dad for Father's Day and I was there when they arrived.  The look on his face when he saw them was priceless!

I haven't had a lot of time for creating the past couple of weeks but I did put together a quick and easy plate (or picture) stand that I wanted to share.
I have several of these classic metal nut crackers in my stash of stuff.
I remember using one of these as a kid to crack nuts.  After cracking the nut you used the matching pick to pick out the meat of the nut.  I can't say I've used one of these in awhile, it's just too easy to buy the nuts ready to use from the store.

Anyway.....I have the matching pick but forgot to take a picture of it before I sawed it in two for this project.

I took a painted block of wood and drilled two holes to accommodate the ends of the nut cracker.
I also drilled a smaller hole in the front of the block for the pick that I sawed in two.
I lightly hammered the pieces in place and the project was complete.
Ready to hold one of my ironstone platters.
The plate found a home on a stack of old picnic baskets in the corner of my kitchen dining area (under my menu board project that you can find the tutorial for here).
Have a great week.

Jane

  2. As always, you are inventive and an inspiration. Now to find where I stashed the nut cracker and pick and find another block of 2x4 or something. I HAVE to make one or more of these. Hope you had a wonderful visit with your family.

  14. I drag my nut crackers and pickers out every year at Christmas and NO ONE uses them. I think it's just too much trouble to crack them yourself these days. Very cute vignette on your picnic baskets. Love that clock planter too. Glad you got to spend time with your Dad and sisters!

  22. Very clever, Jane! What a great way to make a plain block of wood useful. This would probably be good for those scraps leftover from bigger projects.

  23. So cute (and finally a use for those obsolete nut crackers) and a nice change from the ole plate stand! What a great surprise for your dad... I bet it was a wonderful day for you all. :)

  24. Great idea! Also like your picnic baskets--I bought 2 @ $5 each from Walmart years ago and have used them as a little side table for a low chair. (and also great storage!)
